Previous owner backed into door and it was bending worse, so reinforced it with some wood. Joys of home ownership, fix one thing and notice another needs attention. Also lawn edging metro air dam peaking in.

It’s kind of a bitch but we’re getting it done. Total time will be around 6 hours over a month because it’s hard to make time to get together.

It took me 6 or so hours to put in my garage door opener. God, I suck.

Replacing those is right up there with springs on car suspensions, I would much rather pay someone to deal with it than deal with the stored energy deathtrap myself.

It took me about 6 hours too, and most of a 6 pack.

I replaced the door opener in about 5 hours, but I was using all the old brackets and placements. I'm not even drinking today.

I replaced the door panels and springs after a tornado took out our door. It took about three hours working by myself. That gave me the experience I needed to install a garage door opener for my mom earlier this year. I'm now a big fan of belt drive units. Sooooo quiet.

Say what you will about the cost of living in Manhattan, but when something needs fixing I pick up the phone. If it snows, the sidewalks are cleared in a few hours. However, I did change a lightbulb this morning.

Good luck! This is one thing I refuse to do myself. Too risky with all that stored energy if you don't know what you are doing. I think it was like $100 in labor plus the springs for the local garage door guys to do it which was worth it to me. Be safe!

Garage doors, especially uninsulated ones, are pretty cheap. $600 (Canadian) gets a 9x7 r16 steel door at an expensive(ish) local place. Track and rails included, just no opener. You can also generally get replacement panels as well.

Can you explain to me what the spring is for? A while ago my parents had it replaced. I think they’re terrified of springs for some reason since everything else my dad loves replacing himself. He said that we HAD to hire a professional to replace the spring for us.

It’s just a very different lifestyle. I wouldn’t be able to be a construction laborer & live in Manhattan.

I visited years ago, seemed like a cool place.

I replaced the chain drive with a belt for my brother last year. I would defiantly go with those next one I buy.

When the door goes up its attached at the bottom of the door by a cable. That cable is attached to a bar running across the width of the door opening, once the springs are on the bar, you spin the spring, putting tension on the spring then tighten it to the bar.

When either you lift the door or the opener, most of the weight is held up by the spinning tension of the bar & springs.

After you Learn about it, it’s actually pretty simple mechanism.

It's on the list of things to replace. Just not in the budget for him yet.
